The Sixteen's Choral Pilgrimage 2018: Sacred and Profane
The Sixteen | Harry Christophers conductor
Britten Hymn to the Virgin; Hymn to Saint Cecilia; A Shepherd’s Carol; Sacred and Profane | Cornysh My love she mourneth; Salve Regina; Ave Maria mater Dei; Woefully Array’d; Ah Robin, Gentle Robin
The title of this year's Choral Pilgrimage refers to Benjamin Britten’s last great choral piece. Britten’s virtuoso writing is placed alongside works by William Cornysh (1465-1523); whose music was written in the early Tudor florid style. In the works of both composers, worship of the feminine injects erotic charge into spiritual longing, bringing sacred and profane closer together.
