The Mersey Swing Smackdown has rapidly become the dance exchange of choice for those looking for both great dancing, and an fantabulous experience! If you have been to any of our events before, you know that we love to have a good time and we are really looking forward to you seeing our lovely city of Liverpool! The Smackdown is a weekend full of dancing, competitions, live bands, sightseeing, and a heck of a lot of fun!
Mersey Swing has never been strictly Lindy, so don’t be surprised if you see dancing or hear music that is out of the usual realms of Lindy Exchanges.
EVENT DETAILS
DJs and Live Music
Our 2017 exchange promises to be an exciting event live music and amazing DJs.
Our Friday night event at the Black-E will be a very exciting night. This event is hosted by our very own Compere, Cat Foley with a Pete Long and his Pocket Basie Band joining us.
Saturday afternoon will provide you with a range of activities you can join in on, from dance classes to pub crawls. Saturday night at the historic Albert Dock will be once again, hosted by Cat Foley. Live Music will be provided by the great swing dance band, Pete Long and his Good Men!
Saturday night is the night that we will be hosting our competitions including our infamous Group Showcase. New in the competitions this year is the 'Master's' category. A 'Dance with a Random' with a competition for non professional dancers 40 years of age or older.
Saturday evening's afterparty will once again be held at Magnet. Anything goes!
On Sunday afternoon we will finish off the weekend with a tea dance on Lark Lane, at the Old Police Station. Tea and Cake? Definately. You also have the option of joining a stretching class before dancing and a 1940's Etiquette class.
COMPETITIONS & SHOWCASE
Saturday night will be the night of the competitions. You will see some serious Lindy Hop getting thrown down, particularly in the Group Showcase. We mean BATTLE STYLEY (think Step Up 2, but with more jazz and less rain). Do you have the courage to step up? (Silliness is encouraged).
Competitions and Group Showcase will be:
1. Newbie 'Dance with a Random' for those dancing Lindy Hop 12 months or less (in any dance role, lead or follow & any age).
2. Standard 'Dance with a Random' for those non professional dancers dancing Lindy Hop 13 months or more (any age).
3. Masters 'Dance with a Random'for those non professional dancers 40 years of age and older.
3. Group Showcase
· The group must contain at least 4 dancers
· At least one of your group needs to have started dancing Lindy Hop within the last 12 months.
· Anything goes as long as there is a clear nod to Lindy Hop/Jazz or Charleston.
Competitions at the Smackdown are always light hearted and lots of fun.
Judges
Judges for the competition will be an eclectic mix. We will of course have the seasoned judges for the comps but we will also be having at least one judge from the audience on the night.

DAYTIME EVENTS ON SATURDAY
12 Noon
A walking tour of Liverpool City Centre.
Classes (12:30 Sat, or 12:00 Sunday)
Classes on the Saturday will start at 12:30 if classes are for the Sunday they will start at 12:00.
This year we are going to be providing some fun and interesting classes for you!
Free classes across the weekend may include:
- Soultrain
- Vintage Hair Styling (Sat)
- 1940s Table Manners and Etiquette (Sun)
- Musicality
- Stretching and Mindfullness
Please register your interest on EventBrite when you book your ticket. The top two classes with the most interest will be going ahead.
3pm Pub Crawl
Hey it wouldnt be Liverpool without a bit of a pub crawl. See the sites where Mersey Swing has held classes, performed or just generally has some boss memories. See our local Speakeasys. Try Liverpool Gin!

HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKET (Please read all the info first before purchasing)
We want you to have a really boss time while you are here in Liverpool dancing and that means that we try to ensure, as far as possible, a balance between leads and follows. This may mean a wait list (but hopefully not!).
Tickets
Weekend passes are once again being sold on EventBrite.
Standard Weekend Pass: £65
Saturday Night Social Passes may be released at a later day pending ticket sales.
Wrist bands and other info will be provided at the venue Black E on Friday night.
Discounts
Early Bird
There are a limited number of Early Bird Tickets for Follows and Leads. When they are gone, they are gone. Please enter the discount code ‘EarlyBird2017', to receive 10% off your weekend ticket price. The discount code works with the full weekend passes only.
Wait List
If one or the other dance role sells out quickly then there will be a wait list. Once more of the opposite dance role tickets are sold, waitlist places will be released. You have 24 hours to respond to a released ticket, so please keep an eye on your emails.
Cancellation Policy
Unfortunately we do not provide refunds for cancellations for any reason. However, we will accept transfer of the tickets to a different dancer. The ticket will need to be transferred to someone who is dancing the same dance role. It is easier for us if you transfer your ticket directly to the person who is buying your ticket from you. We scan the bar codes at the door so changing of names is a little more complicated than just providing the e-ticket. Each e-ticket equals one wrist band.
Alcohol Policy
18s and over are welcome.
Do not bring your own alcohol to the Saturday evening event. We will lose our deposit.
Friday night at the Black E is BYOB. A water station will also be available.
Saturday Night at the Albert Dock will have a bar (it also serves coffee and cake!). Please do not bring your own alcohol to this event. Water will be available.
The after party at the Magnet will also have a bar. Please do not bring your own drink to this venue.
The Tea Dance on Sunday will serve tea and cake.
MERCHANDISE
Smackdown t-shirts shirts will be available on Friday night at the Black E. £12.

For those of you who are looking for accommodation on a budget, Hatters Hostel is centrally located and very good value.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Premier League Football fixtures list will be released in mid June. Should there be a football match on the weekend of the Smackdown, hotel costs will be ridiculous as they increase the rack rate in order to accomodate travelling fans. Book your accomodation early!
FAQs
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
Our Saturday event will be serving Alcohol, therefore over 18's are welcome. Please do not bring your own alchol to the evening events on the Saturday.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Friday Night: The Black E is in the city centre and there are many car parks nearby. There is on street parking beside the venue or a secure parking area on Renshaw Street.
Saturday, at The Albert Dock: There is pay and display parking at the Albert Dock, and this is walking distance from Lime Street Station.
Lark Lane Community Centre: Public transportation is available to this site and there is plenty of on parking along the surrounding streets. Take the 82 bus from the City Centre and get off at the end of Lark Lane. Walk to the other end of Lark Lane and the venue is on the right.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Our venues on Friday is BYOB and Saturday have cash bars and water stations.
